Consulate General of Canada in New York,

In 2019, CMAA curated the exhibition Making Their Mark: Canadian Artists in New York for the Consulate General of Canada in New York. A celebratory event marking the 150th anniversary of Canada’s official presence in New York, the presentation featured the work of four artists living and working in New York: Rachel Beach, Mona Saeed Kamal, Cal Lane and Elise Rasmussen. A highlight of the exhibition, Beach’s photographic Hands series shows abstract shapes painted onto the artist’s hand. The shapes concretely address the underlying structures of the hand, while also pointing to the evolution of language and communication, from cave painting and prehistoric glyphs to maritime flags and modern-day typography.
